Last Post

As the funeral of one of Britain's last WW1 veterans takes place today, the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy (whose name makes her sound like a character off the 1980s sitcom Bread, don't you think?) has written a poem to mark the occasion.

I find it both slightly prosaic and deeply moving. It's a wonderful image of the might-have-beens of personal history.
